Why the speckle deepens instead of wearing off

Every mug in this batch came off the wheel the same week, thrown and glazed in small runs so no two are quite alike. The speckle people keep asking about isn't in the glaze at all - it's iron already in the clay body, which is why it deepens slightly with years of use instead of wearing off the way a printed pattern would.
A few people asked in the comments last time whether that meant the piece needed special care. Short answer: no. Dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps the foot ring cleaner over time, and the microwave is fine too.
